Profiles range from roll top (with various edges) with or without a built in backsplash to bevel, square, rounded, and ogie style for laminate.
There are so many choices from laminates to solid surface with colors too many to mention, that we, with the assistance of our dealer can make the process as simple as possible.
Laminate countertops otherwise referred to as arborite (this is actually a brand name) countertops, generally consist of layers of paper or fabric impregnated with resin, then glued to a particle core wood backer is much better looking than it used to be, thanks to new printing technology and decorative edges. Laminate is available in hundreds of patterns and colors, and is inexpensive and relatively easy to install. It works in areas of heavy use but minimal abuse. Laminates typically show seams on the front edge and between the backsplash and counter, but Formica and Wilsonart offer other edge profiles that hide the dark line along the edge of the counter. Sheets of laminate are manufactured in 4×8 and 5×12 ft sizes.
Another option is post-forming, also known as roll top, which is a process that uses heat to form and bend laminate sheets, making them look continuous and without seams, having the backsplash integrated to form one unit. This is the most cost effective countertop but has its own disadvantages. Anything other than a straight run, such as an L shape counter, there will be total width seams, as this product only comes in straight lengths.
Benefits: Laminate countertops look great, are easy to clean, relatively easy to install, and are great for a tight budget. They are quite durable, within reason and fairly resistant to staining.
Disadvantages: Most versions have a colored top layer over a dark core, which can show at the edges. Water can seep through seams or between the countertop and backsplash, weakening the material beneath or causing lifting. Laminate is easily scratched and nicked and can’t be repaired–so use a cutting board. Textured finishes are better than flat finishes at hiding imperfections.
One of the most popular styles of backsplash with either laminate or solid surface is tile.
